  • Kari Spicer

Director of Coaching- Academy & Goalkeepers

For Coach Spice, soccer has always been more than a game—it’s about people, connection, and the relationships that shape us.

Kari was born and raised in Colorado, where she played for Colorado United and Heritage High School, helping lead the team to the 2008 5A State Final. Her college career took her to Dominican College in New York, where she competed in both soccer and softball.

Adventure has always been part of her life. By age 14, Kari was a certified Master Diver, traveling with her family on scuba diving trips that exposed her to diverse cultures and shaped how she saw the world. Still, Colorado’s snow, sun, and mountains drew her back home.

After earning her degree in Physics and Math at Colorado State University, she discovered new athletic passions—rugby, telemark skiing, and snowmobiling. For four years, she worked as a snowmaker around the world before returning home, where she met her coaching mentor, Jami Cobb, while playing indoor soccer at TOCA. At that time, Kari was competing as one of Colorado’s top goalkeepers in semi-professional leagues, with opportunities to play professionally in Italy, when a serious spinal injury nearly ended her career.

That moment changed everything. With Jami’s encouragement, Kari began goalkeeper coaching and quickly found joy in teaching, learning, and mentoring. Since then, she’s worked with players of all ages and levels, helping them grow not only as athletes but as people. Today, she’s playing stronger than ever and approaches each session as both a coach and a lifelong student of the game.

As Academy Director of Coaching & Goalkeeper Coach at Avalanche, Coach Spice’s mission is to create an environment where every player feels connected, challenged, and inspired—not just to become better soccer players, but to grow into stronger people who carry these lessons beyond the field.

Both went on to coach Avalanche teams, with Thomas also serving on the board and assigning referees during graduate school.
